Nepal petroleum import value surges 73 percent to Rs 65.49 billion

Nepal’s petroleum import value rose by 73 percent to Rs 65.49 billion during the first two months of the 2026/27 fiscal year. This represents a significant increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

According to Department of Customs records, fossil fuel imports accounted for 16.31 percent of the country’s total import value, which reached Rs 401.51 billion. Specific expenditures included Rs 28.03 billion for diesel, Rs 16.13 billion for petrol, and Rs 5.22 billion for aviation fuel. Additionally, cooking gas imports totaled Rs 16.02 billion.

Traders attribute the surge in the import bill to rising international oil prices, the increased value of the US dollar, and a higher volume of purchased quantities.
