Nepal police expand money laundering probe into Deepak Bhatta network

Police in Kathmandu have expanded an investigation into an alleged money laundering network linked to businessman Deepak Bhatta. Authorities have arrested Sushil Bhatta, the former CEO of the Investment Board Nepal and brother of Deepak Bhatta, along with Inam Sapkota.

Investigators suspect Sapkota acted as an intermediary to influence the legal proceedings against Deepak Bhatta, who remains in custody. The probe is also examining the potential involvement of former Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana. Information retrieved from Rana’s mobile phone reportedly revealed connections to Sapkota, suggesting attempts to settle the case through improper channels.

Sapkota is being investigated for suspicious financial transactions under the Nepal Rastra Bank Act. Sushil Bhatta was arrested by the Kathmandu District Police Range following evidence of suspicious communications and financial dealings involving Sapkota. Sushil Bhatta has been granted a seven-day remand for further investigation.
