Nepal Police faces infrastructure shortfalls and rising resignations

A recent Nepal Police annual progress report shows that a large share of its 2,660 sanctioned units lack basic facilities. Only 1,884 units have their own office buildings, while 776 operate without dedicated premises and 835 lack barracks. Many units also miss mess facilities and land ownership, highlighting a widening gap between demand for new units and available infrastructure.

At the same time, the force is grappling with a staffing crisis. In fiscal year 2025/26, 1,264 police personnel resigned, nearly double the 681 who retired under the mandatory age or service rules. Officers cite the 30‑year service limit, heavy workloads and better job prospects abroad. The resignations erode institutional knowledge and increase recruitment and training costs for the government.
