Nepal protests erupt after rape and murder of three-year-old girl
Widespread protests have erupted across Nepal following the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl, identified as Garima Chaudhary, in Madhesh province. The child went missing from Bara district on August 16 and her body was discovered three days later in an abandoned house.
Authorities have arrested nine suspects in connection with the crime, including a 16-year-old. The incident has triggered intense public anger and demands for legal reform, specifically regarding harsher punishments for minors convicted of violent sexual crimes. While some activists are calling for the death penalty, others, including human rights activist Gauri Pradhan, have urged caution regarding such measures.
Public outcry has also targeted police negligence. Protesters criticized the slow initial response and expressed outrage after a video of a teenage suspect in custody was leaked on social media. Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, the Bara District Chief District Officer, confirmed that one police officer has been identified as being involved in the leak and has faced disciplinary action.
Following demonstrations in Simara, the victim's family reached a written agreement with government ministers. In response, the government has pledged to review laws concerning serious offenses and has committed to constructing a memorial in honor of the child.
