Nepal sees massive student outflow with Rs 556 billion spent abroad

Between fiscal years 2020/21 and 2025/26, approximately 548,717 Nepalis obtained No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to pursue higher education in 83 different countries. This surge in student migration has resulted in a significant capital outflow, with nearly Rs 556.68 billion spent on foreign education during this period.

The number of students seeking permission to study abroad has increased sharply following the COVID-19 pandemic. In FY 2020/21, only 27,211 NOCs were issued, but the figure exceeded 100,000 annually in the subsequent years, reaching 117,805 in FY 2024/25.

Destination preferences among Nepali students are shifting. Japan has overtaken Australia as the most popular destination, with 156,407 NOCs issued for Japan compared to 127,916 for Australia over the five-year period. Other major destinations include the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Republic of Korea. Officials note that the trend is driven by factors such as changing immigration policies, better job markets abroad, and the ability to work while studying.
