Nepal settles Sunseri violence, declares victims martyrs

The government of Nepal and the families of two youths killed in a police firing in Captainganj, Sunseri district, signed a seven‑point agreement. The agreement designates the deceased, Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta, as martyrs, provides each family with 1 million Nepali rupees, and guarantees a government job for one eligible family member. Authorities pledged a swift, impartial investigation of the incident and of a local madrasa, with promises of strict legal action against any offenders. A memorial park is to be built at the site, and the agreement also includes financial compensation for injured persons and plans for ongoing community support.

The settlement aims to ease communal tensions that have spread across the Madhesh region following the violence, and to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
