Nepal targets digital transformation to boost tourism and mountain climbing

Nepal is pursuing a digital and technological transformation of its tourism sector to enhance safety, marketing, and infrastructure. During the 47th World Tourism Day, officials emphasized using AI and digital tools for crisis management, such as real-time travel updates and early warning systems for disaster readiness.

Despite the sector's importance, industry leaders have identified significant hurdles. The Nepal Mountaineering Association noted that poor connectivity, unreliable air travel, and long road transit times prevent the country from reaching its full economic potential compared to global hubs.

In the autumn 2026 climbing season, the Department of Tourism reported that 637 climbers obtained permits for 18 mountains, generating approximately Rs 238.51 million ($1.57 million) in royalties. Mount Manaslu was the most popular destination, accounting for the vast majority of this revenue.
