Nepal-Tibet border floods cause mass casualties as experts warn of similar risks in Argentina

Sudden flooding on the border between Nepal and Tibet has resulted in at least 100 deaths, according to reports from August 26, 2026. The disaster has left hundreds of people missing or incommunicado. In the affected regions, the Trishuli River rose between 15 and 18 meters above its normal level, destroying settlements along a 72-kilometer stretch.

Following this tragedy, experts are warning that El Chaltén in Argentina faces a similar risk of a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Specialists note that the physical sequence of the Nepal event—a landslide into a glacial lake causing an abrupt discharge of water, rocks, and sediment—could potentially occur in the Laguna Torre basin near El Chaltén. The northern slope of Cerro Solo has shown signs of instability for years, posing a threat that a collapse could trigger a massive release of water into the Fitz Roy River valley.
