Nepi municipality opposes lithium mining research extension

The municipality of Nepi has formally opposed a decision by the Lazio region to extend mining research authorizations for two additional years. The extension covers an area between Nepi and Campagnano di Roma, specifically in the Settevene locality, where searches for lithium, boron, and potassium sulfate are being conducted.

The municipal council voted unanimously against the regional measure. Mayor Vita expressed significant concerns regarding the potential impact on the environment, local economy, and resident livability. A primary concern cited is the risk of groundwater pollution resulting from drilling operations that could reach depths of approximately 2,000 meters.

The mining research request was originally initiated in February 2022 by the company Minerals srl, covering an area of 1,213 hectares. While the neighboring municipality of Campagnano di Roma has not yet issued a formal opinion, Nepi has adopted a stance focused on the safeguarding of its territory and natural resources.
