Nequi Negocios enables NFC mobile payments for Colombian merchants

Nequi Negocios, an independent platform of the Nequi digital wallet, has introduced a new feature allowing Android smartphones with NFC technology to function as electronic payment terminals. This update, implemented through an alliance with the Wompi payment gateway (a subsidiary of Grupo Cibest), enables small merchants, entrepreneurs, and independent workers in Colombia to process contactless debit and credit card transactions without the need for physical dataphones.

The system supports both national and international Visa and Mastercard transactions. For NFC-based contactless payments, the transaction limits are set between a minimum of $1,500 and a maximum of $250,000. For higher-value credit card payments, merchants can utilize payment links. Credit card transactions processed through this method are automatically deferred to a single installment.

There are no fixed monthly costs or activation fees for this service. Instead, Wompi charges a transaction fee of 1.99% plus VAT on the total sale value. Funds from these transactions are settled into the merchant's Nequi account within a maximum of two business days. The platform currently serves over 137,000 registered merchants in Colombia.
