Nerima City highlights its animation history and legacy

Nerima City is highlighting its deep historical connection to the Japanese animation industry through various cultural features and upcoming events.

Research into the legacy of Osamu Tezuka, often called the ‘God of Manga,’ underscores his transformative impact on animation. Tezuka’s work in Nerima, including his time at Toei Animation and the establishment of Mushi Production, pioneered the 30-minute continuous TV anime series format with ‘Astro Boy.’ His studio, Mushi Production, was a training ground for many legendary creators and produced the ‘Animerama’ series of adult-oriented animated films.

Building on this heritage, the event ‘Seiyuden 2 ~Jewel Box of Voices~’ is scheduled for October 31, 2026, at the Nerima Cultural Center. The event will feature legendary voice actors and production staff from the 1970s and 1980s, including Akira Kamiya, Shigeru Chiba, and Michihiko Suwa, who will discuss the history and future of the anime industry.
