Neriman Cahit family rejects Cyprus Forum award
The family of Neriman Cahit has declined an award scheduled to be presented by the Cyprus Forum during its upcoming event from September 28–30. The family also announced they will not attend the award ceremony.
In a statement sent to the Cyprus Forum, the family expressed that the decision was made to protest “exclusionary and divisive attitudes” that they believe harm peace and rapprochement efforts in Cyprus. They emphasized the need for a stronger stance against “extreme, divisive, and othering” approaches during a period of increased need for peace.
The controversy stems from disputes regarding official titles, specifically involving Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı. The family noted that pressure from extreme circles to refer to mayors representing both communities of Nicosia using different titles could damage the culture of consensus and peace-seeking efforts. They stated the refusal is an expression of their voice against a mindset that seeks to heighten tensions and position the two communities as adversaries.
