Raspberry pruning: essential September maintenance for healthy harvests

Proper maintenance of raspberry plants (Rubus idaeus) during September is critical for ensuring future harvests. Gardeners are cautioned against leaving cut canes on the ground, as these debris can harbor fungi like Botrytis and Didymella applanata, as well as pests such as Drosophila suzukii. Accumulated organic matter can block airflow and trap moisture, creating an ideal microclimate for diseases.

Effective pruning requires distinguishing between remontant (everbearing) and non-remontant varieties. For remontant varieties, which produce two waves of fruit, pruning must be done carefully to avoid losing the autumn harvest. In both cases, brown, dried canes that have already fruited should be removed, while vigorous green shoots should be preserved to support the following year's production. The Société Nationale d’Horticulture de France recommends performing this maintenance between mid-September and early October, before significant temperature drops occur.
