Nerja implements employment plan amid local housing and labor shortages

The Nerja City Council has approved the XI Municipal Employment Plan against Social Exclusion and Economic Vulnerability. This initiative involves an investment of 634,760.40 euros to hire 30 unemployed individuals for roles in cleaning and gardening.

The hiring process includes specific quotas to support vulnerable groups: 50% for long-term unemployed individuals over 35, 25% for youth under 35, 15% for those over 60, and 10% for people with disabilities.

Simultaneously, the local business sector is addressing a labor shortage linked to a housing crisis. The AEN is forming a specialized task force comprising urban planners and business owners to develop solutions for affordable worker accommodation. High housing costs and a high concentration of tourist rentals—accounting for 16.36% of registered homes—have contributed to a stagnant local population, impacting the commerce and hospitality sectors.
