Nerviano Medical Sciences announces 150 layoffs amid research hub crisis

Mass layoffs have been announced at the Nerviano research hub near Milan, affecting approximately 150 workers across two companies: Nerviano Medical Sciences (NMS) and Accelera. On September 25, collective dismissal procedures were initiated for 86 employees at NMS and 65 at Accelera, signaling a potential cessation of current activities at the oncological and preclinical research center.

The crisis is attributed to a severe financial and industrial downturn. According to company communications, NMS reported significant consolidated losses, including €86.6 million in 2025, and ended the 2025 fiscal year with a negative net equity of €9.1 million. The situation was further exacerbated by the commercial failure of certain developed molecules and the unsuccessful attempt to find an investor for the “Discovery” business unit.

Nerviano Mayor Daniela Colombo has requested transparency from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy and the Lombardy Region. She is seeking clarity on the failed reindustrialization project and the future of the scientific expertise housed at the center, describing the news as a grave development for the local territory and the field of cancer research.
