Nestlé Portugal implements decarbonization projects in Avanca and Porto
Nestlé Portugal has announced several investments aimed at decarbonizing its industrial operations, specifically targeting its cereal factory in Avanca and its roasted coffee unit in Porto. A key project involves the installation of a heat pump at the Avanca plant, which recovers residual energy from the cooling center to heat water for production processes and facility climate control. This system is reportedly nine times more efficient than conventional natural gas systems, saving approximately 7,800 MWh of natural gas and 20,000 cubic meters of water annually, while preventing the emission of 2,000 tons of CO2 equivalent.
The company’s sustainability strategy also includes renewable energy production at the Nestlé Campus through the installation of 351 photovoltaic panels and an urban-adapted wind turbine. Both strategic factories utilize 100% renewable electricity and hold “Zero Waste to Landfill” certification. Additionally, Nestlé has transitioned its corporate fleet to include approximately 525 electric vehicles, which is expected to reduce annual emissions by 2,322 tons of CO2 equivalent as part of its goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
