Nestle India receives regulatory notice over infant formula claims

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a notice to Nestle India demanding scientific evidence to support digestibility claims made for its Lactogen Pro 1 infant formula. The regulator specifically noted that the product packaging or promotional materials claim the whey protein in the formula is ‘easy to digest.’

Nestle India has been directed to provide scientific documentation within a specified timeframe to demonstrate that these marketing statements comply with national food safety and advertising regulations. The FSSAI clarified that the notice does not establish that the claim is false, nor has any penalty been imposed at this stage.

This action is part of a wider regulatory crackdown by the FSSAI targeting potentially misleading claims and non-compliant promotions across the food industry. The scrutiny extends to other products, including Nan Excella Pro Stage 1 and Complan, as authorities seek to ensure all nutritional benefits and health-related characteristics are backed by credible scientific substantiation.
