Netanya: Border Police combatant killed after opening fire

David Hoyer Amrani, a 20-year-old Border Police (Magav) combatant, was shot and killed by police in the Kiryat HaSharon neighborhood of Netanya after opening fire on residential buildings. The incident occurred in the evening when Amrani, dressed in civilian clothes, used a military weapon to fire toward apartment blocks near a municipal stadium.

Israeli police responded to the gunfire and were met with shots from Amrani. Officers returned fire, neutralizing him at the scene. No other injuries were reported among the public or security forces. While initial reports considered a terrorist motive, police have ruled out nationalist motivations following the identification of the shooter.

Amrani’s family and friends have raised concerns regarding his mental state. Although not officially recognized by rehabilitation services as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acquaintances reported he had been experiencing psychological distress and difficulty sleeping following his service in Hebron. His family noted he had been preparing his military equipment for his return to duty, suggesting the incident was unexpected.
