Netanyahu proposes using blockchain to bypass potential sanctions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed developing an alternative economic system using cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to mitigate the impact of potential international banking sanctions. Netanyahu stated he has already requested a plan to explore these options as a way to prepare Israel for possible economic restrictions.
The proposal has faced significant opposition from the Bank of Israel and the domestic economic community. The central bank issued a statement asserting that Israel’s economy is best served by maintaining strong relationships with major trading partners and working to prevent sanctions rather than attempting to circumvent them. The Bank of Israel also noted that cryptocurrencies do not effectively allow for the evasion of sanctions.
More than 100 economists, including two Nobel laureates, signed a letter describing the proposal as useless. Political opposition leaders have also criticized the move, with Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot labeling the plan a threat to national security, citing concerns over how Israeli tech companies would manage foreign investment and international payments. While no country has currently imposed banking sanctions on Israel, recent actions by the United Kingdom, France, and Canada regarding West Bank settlement imports have increased discussions regarding economic pressure.
