Netanyahu targets Turkey in Israeli election campaign
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has centered Turkey in his upcoming election campaign, utilizing large billboards in Tel Aviv that depict Turkish leadership alongside figures from Iran and Hezbollah. The campaign messaging suggests these entities seek Netanyahu’s defeat.
This political move follows a recent Israeli military strike on the Abu al-Dahar airbase in northern Syria, which targeted activities Israel identifies as an increase in Turkish military presence. While Israel maintains the strike was a necessary operational requirement based on intelligence, the action has sparked international debate.
Critics, including Tom Barrack, a former special envoy for Syria, have characterized the strike as an ‘unnecessary escalation’ and suggested it may be a provocative move intended to provide a political advantage ahead of the elections in approximately two months. Both Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have defended the military action as a response to strategic threats.
