Netanyahu travels to New York for UN General Assembly amid arrest warrant controversy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. His visit comes amid significant controversy regarding an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued for him over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sparked debate by calling on federal authorities to enforce the ICC arrest warrant during Netanyahu’s visit, stating that while the city lacks independent legal authority, the federal government does. In response, Israeli UN Representative Danny Danon accused Mamdani of inciting protests and creating an “anti-Jewish atmosphere.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Netanyahu will not be arrested while in the United States. Due to anticipated protests from pro-Palestinian civil society groups, Netanyahu’s flight is expected to land at Newark Airport in New Jersey rather than the customary JFK Airport in New York.
