Lalka adaptations spark cultural debate in Poland
Two major adaptations of Bolesław Prus’s classic novel ‘Lalka’ have premiered in Poland within two weeks of each other, sparking significant cultural debate. The first is a Netflix series directed by Paweł Maślona, featuring Tomasz Schuchardt as Stanisław Wokulski. The second is a cinematic feature directed by Maciej Kawalski, starring Marcin Dorociński in the lead role and Kamila Urzędowska as Izabela Łęcka.
Critics and viewers have compared the two productions, noting that Kawalski’s film aims for a more classical and faithful depiction of the 19th-century setting, while Maślona’s series offers a modern reinterpretation. Despite the competition, the dual releases have revitalized interest in the original literature; studies indicate that nearly half of the Netflix viewers expressed a desire to reread the novel.
In support of the cultural event, the Polish Ministry of Education has launched a dedicated educational platform to help students and teachers engage with the story. The cinematic release has also seen high attendance, with notable actors like Marek Kondrat returning to the screen for the production.
