Netflix adapts John Steinbeck’s East of Eden

The Netflix series ‘East of Eden’, created, written, and produced by Zoe Kazan, is an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s iconic 1952 novel. Set in California's Salinas Valley between the Civil War and World War I, the historical drama explores themes of morality, human nature, and the influence of family history across generations.

The story follows the Trask family, drawing parallels to the biblical myth of Cain and Abel. The narrative tracks the lives of characters such as Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh, and Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, as they navigate the darker aspects of the Californian dream. The adaptation maintains key plot points from the novel, including the complex relationship between Adam and his son Cal, and the eventual downfall of Cathy, who becomes a powerful but paranoid figure in Salinas before her death.

Directed by Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, the production features an ensemble cast including Mike Faist, Ciarán Hinds, and Martha Plimpton.
