Netflix adapts Miles Franklin's Australian classic My Brilliant Career

Netflix has released a new adaptation of the classic Australian novel "My Brilliant Career" by Miles Franklin. Starring Philippa Northeast as the protagonist Sybylla Melvin, the series offers a modern and bold reimagining of the turn-of-the-century period drama.

Unlike previous adaptations, this version adopts a contemporary and feminist lens, featuring a more irreverent tone and diverse casting to reflect the reality of Australia in 1900. The production includes characters such as Harry Beecham, reimagined with Chinese heritage, and Nell, an Aboriginal stockwoman.

The series, led by creator and screenwriter Liz Doran, follows Sybylla's journey from an impoverished life on the land toward artistic fulfillment and independence while navigating the rigid social and gender expectations of her era.
