Netflix and Disney+ Plan New Advertising and Live‑TV Strategies

Netflix is evaluating a shift toward a television‑channel style model that would add live, linear streams alongside its on‑demand catalog. Sources cited by the Wall Street Journal say the company hopes the change will keep viewers engaged longer after noting a decline in user interaction and a 40% drop in its stock value over the past year. The proposed multi‑platform approach would resemble the offerings of Apple and Amazon, combining live sports, events and continuous programming.

Disney+ is reportedly working on a completely free, ad‑supported subscription tier. Product and technology chief Adam Smith referenced the idea in an internal meeting, noting it remains a possibility rather than a confirmed launch plan. The move is seen as a response to the growth of free, ad‑supported services such as YouTube, Pluto TV and Tubi, and to competition in the United‑States streaming market where ad‑supported platforms now capture a notable share of viewing time.
