Netflix and Spotify targeted in rising global phishing campaigns
A recent Financial Threat Report by Kaspersky reveals a shift in phishing tactics, where cybercriminals increasingly impersonate popular subscription-based digital services to steal user data and payment information. Globally, Netflix is the most impersonated brand, accounting for 28% of cases, followed by Apple at 21%, and both Spotify and Amazon at 18%.
In Latin America, Spotify is the most frequently spoofed brand in frauds related to digital services and online purchases. The report highlights that attackers exploit the familiarity of these platforms to lower users' defenses. Beyond entertainment, financial gateways remain primary targets; Mastercard leads impersonation rates in this sector at 33%, followed by Visa, PayPal, and American Express.
Security experts recommend that users verify account notifications by accessing official applications directly or typing known web addresses into browsers rather than clicking on links provided in suspicious messages. Key warning signs include mismatched URLs and high-pressure tactics demanding immediate information disclosure.
