Netflix cancels David Fincher’s American ‘Squid Game’ project

Netflix has reportedly shelved a planned American version of the hit series ‘Squid Game’ that was being developed by director David Fincher. The project was intended to be an independent story within the same universe, featuring new characters and games inspired by American traditions, such as dodgeball and king of the hill. The narrative was expected to explore social and economic issues specific to the United States, including student debt and the healthcare crisis.

While the story was set in the U.S., production was planned to take place in the United Kingdom. The cancellation is attributed to shifts in Netflix’s priorities and creative differences regarding the series' title. Although the American adaptation will not proceed, Netflix intends to expand the ‘Squid Game’ franchise through other international spin-offs adapted to different cultures rather than a single localized remake.

David Fincher remains under contract with Netflix and is currently working on ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ a sequel to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ starring Brad Pitt.
