Netflix CEO offers new explanation for Mindhunter cancellation

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has offered a conflicting explanation regarding why the acclaimed series ‘Mindhunter’ failed to produce a third season. While director David Fincher previously attributed the cancellation to the high cost of production relative to viewership, Sarandos suggests the delay was due to the director's schedule.

In 2023, Fincher stated that the decision rested with Netflix, noting that the series was “a particularly expensive series and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment.”

However, during a recent panel, Sarandos indicated that Netflix had always anticipated a third season but that Fincher’s meticulous nature and film commitments prevented it from moving forward. Sarandos remarked that Fincher “couldn’t just do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to shortchange either one,” leading to the show being pushed off indefinitely.
