Netflix Deploys AI in Production of About 300 Films and Series
Netflix disclosed in its earnings report that generative artificial intelligence has been used in roughly 300 titles, mainly for post‑production work such as enhancing crowd scenes, historical battles and opening sequences. Chief content officer Ted Sarandos said a documentary series featured 17 minutes of AI‑enhanced footage produced twice as fast and at half the cost of traditional methods, allowing shots that would otherwise be unaffordable to be retained.
The company has broadened AI use beyond production, acquiring an AI startup founded by Ben Affleck and launching an animation studio that employs AI tools. It also experimented with an AI‑generated voice of the late actor Gene Wilder for a reality‑show segment. Netflix reported revenue of $12.56 billion and is on track to double its advertising income.
The rollout illustrates how AI is becoming a cost‑saving, speed‑enhancing technology for major streaming services, with implications for the wider film and television industry.
