Netflix eyes Megan Rapinoe and Marta for 2027 World Cup roles
Netflix is reportedly in discussions with soccer stars Megan Rapinoe and Marta to serve as analysts for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. This tournament marks the streaming service’s first major undertaking as a live sports broadcaster for a month-long event.
According to reports from The Athletic, Netflix is targeting Rapinoe, a former United States women’s national team star and two-time World Cup winner, for a studio analyst role. The streamer has also held early-stage talks with Brazilian legend Marta, though her involvement may depend on whether she participates in the tournament as a player.
To bolster its sports department, Netflix has already made full-time on-air hire Elle Duncan, who is expected to anchor much of the coverage, and tapped broadcaster Andres Cantor to lead Spanish-language commentary. The move represents a significant expansion of Netflix’s live sports strategy following recent experiments with NFL and MLB programming.
