Netflix faces $135 billion market cap loss amid viewership stagnation
Netflix is facing significant financial and creative challenges, having lost over $135 billion in market capitalization in 2026. The company's stock has declined by 26% since the start of the year, making it one of the worst performers in the Nasdaq 100.
Investors are concerned about stagnating viewership and the company's ability to produce major hits despite high content spending. This struggle is compounded by intense competition in the streaming market and a recent decline in Emmy wins, which has raised questions regarding the platform's creative momentum. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has acknowledged that growth is not meeting desired rates, noting that content costs are rising while the market becomes increasingly crowded.
To combat these issues, Netflix has implemented administrative changes, including 1,000 layoffs, and has pivoted toward new revenue models such as advertising and live sports broadcasting—strategies the company previously resisted. While the company maintains that user engagement remains satisfactory, there are growing concerns that existing subscribers find the service less appealing than in previous years.
