Netflix faces backlash over Stanford Prison Experiment reality series

Netflix is facing public backlash following the announcement of a new reality series titled ‘The New Stanford Prison Experiment’. Scheduled to premiere on October 21, the six-episode series involves 30 volunteers who will be randomly assigned roles as either guards or prisoners within a real prison setting.

The production aims to explore whether individuals conform to assigned hierarchical roles or if empathy and ethics can withstand systemic pressure. This has sparked intense debate on social media regarding the ethics of recreating a study known for its psychological harm. The original 1971 experiment, conducted by psychologist Philip Zimbardo at Stanford University, was famously terminated after only six days due to the abusive behavior of guards and the emotional distress experienced by prisoners.

Critics have raised concerns about the boundaries between scientific research and entertainment, questioning the safety measures in place for volunteers and the morality of using such a controversial psychological phenomenon for a television format.
