Netflix faces Italy class action over alleged illegal subscription hikes

A Rome tribunal ruled that Netflix’s price increases for Italian subscribers between 2017 and 2024 were illegal because they were based on abusive contract clauses. The decision opens the way for a collective redress claim filed by the consumer association Movimento Consumatori, which seeks refunds of €250‑€500 per subscriber and aims to revert prices to 2017 levels.

The class action, launched in July, has attracted over 240,000 participants, potentially representing 5‑6 million users. Netflix has appealed the ruling to the Rome Court of Appeal and has not yet issued refunds. The association also notes similar legal challenges pending in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Poland.
