Netflix faces market pressure as YouTube gains streaming share

Netflix is facing increased market pressure as viewer engagement shifts toward competitors like YouTube. While the platform recorded a record 97 billion viewing hours in the first half of 2026, YouTube has captured a significant portion of the US streaming market, accounting for 14.2 percent of total viewing time compared to Netflix's 7.8 percent. This shift is particularly pronounced among the 18-to-34 demographic, who are increasingly moving toward free content.

Financial analysts have reacted to these changing consumption patterns. Wells Fargo lowered its price target for Netflix from 80 to 57 US dollars, citing engagement risks and the potential for declining viewership of core series. This trend poses a threat to the company's ability to monetize its advertising subscription tier through ad pricing and inventory utilization.

In response, Netflix is pivoting toward live content and established formats, including sports rights for the 2027 and 2031 World Cups. Additionally, the company's flagship franchise, Stranger Things, is seeing a decline in momentum; the animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales From '85, has failed to reach the top charts globally, marking a significant drop in engagement compared to the original series.
