Netflix faces viewership challenges due to long gaps between series seasons
A study by Luminate Intelligence indicates that long gaps between seasons are becoming a significant issue for Netflix. The average wait time between seasons for major series is approximately 20.7 months, a delay that can lead to substantial audience loss.
Data shows that when gaps exceed 18 months, viewership often drops sharply. For example, 'Wednesday' saw a viewership decline of nearly 59 percent between its first and second seasons, while 'Bridgerton' experienced a 20 percent decrease between its third and fourth seasons. 'The Gentlemen' also saw a 45 percent loss in viewers despite reaching the number one spot upon its return. These declines are attributed to subscribers canceling services or losing interest due to the time elapsed.
In terms of historical performance, 'Wednesday' Season 1 remains the most-watched Netflix series of all time among English-language productions, recording over 252 million views. This surpasses 'Stranger Things' Season 4, which holds the third position with 140 million views. Netflix calculates these rankings by dividing total viewing hours by the runtime of the production to ensure a fair comparison between series of different lengths.
