Netflix releases Mexican film 'Contra el huracán' inspired by Hurricane Otis
The Mexican film 'Contra el huracán' (Surviving Hurricane Otis) has premiered on Netflix, dramatizing the survival of sailors during the devastating Category 5 Hurricane Otis, which struck Acapulco in October 2023.
Directed by Jorge Michel Grau, the film follows the fictionalized story of two half-brothers, Wirpul and Candi, who find themselves adrift at sea without power or communication as the storm intensifies. While the characters and their family conflicts are fictionalized, the production is heavily inspired by the real-life experiences of sailors Marlon Alfonso Valdez and Jonathan ‘Chino’ Trinidad.
The real-life survivors served as consultants during the three-year production to ensure technical and emotional accuracy. The film utilized approximately 800 people, including visual effects specialists, to recreate the extreme conditions of the hurricane. The production aimed to highlight not only the physical struggle for survival but also the social inequalities and maritime risks faced by workers during such natural disasters.
