Netflix undergoes major leadership overhaul and layoffs

Netflix is executing a significant restructuring of its leadership and workforce following concerns over slowing subscriber growth and declining viewer engagement. The company recently laid off approximately 1,000 employees, representing about 6% of its global workforce, with cuts impacting the product, technology, legal, and human resources departments.

In a major executive shakeup, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria is departing after nearly a decade with the company. She is set to be succeeded by Peter Rice, a former Disney and Fox executive, on October 26. Additionally, Dan Lin, the head of Netflix’s film division, has been dismissed. Reports suggest Lin’s departure may have been influenced by tensions regarding the production of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia adaptation.

These changes come as Netflix faces increased competition from platforms like YouTube and TikTok, and as Co-CEO Ted Sarandos noted that the company is not growing as quickly as desired in the United States. Despite these challenges, the company reported a 44% increase in net income to $3.66 billion in the third quarter, and revenue grew by 12% year-over-year to approximately $12.9 billion.
