Netflix India developing shorter feature films under 90 minutes

Netflix India is reportedly developing a new slate of feature films with runtimes between 60 and 85 minutes. This strategy aims to cater to viewers seeking shorter viewing experiences that fit into limited time windows, such as breaks between activities.

This approach is not being launched as a formal production label or separate financing category, but rather as part of a broader effort to experiment with different formats, creators, and storytelling styles. The shorter runtime is seen as particularly suitable for genres like taut thrillers, intimate family dramas, and high-concept comedies.

Several projects are reportedly in development, including a film directed by Navdeep Singh and another produced by Aanand L. Rai under Yellow Color Productions, directed by Pushkar Mahabal. The streamer has already seen success with shorter content; the 52-minute comedy drama ‘Greater Kalesh’ reportedly recorded 1.7 million hours viewed during its opening week and entered Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English titles.
