Netflix Japanese drama “Gas Human” sparks design discussion
Netflix launched the Japanese series “Gas Human” on July 2, reviving Toho’s 1960s “Gas Human” special‑effects franchise. The show follows UTA as a gas‑transforming killer and stars actors such as Shun Oguri, Aoi Yu and others, under the direction of Shinsuke Katayama, a protégé of Bong Joon‑ho.
Character and costume design were overseen by veteran designer Isao Tazue, who created the signature blue‑gray coat. Tazue explained that the coat conveys three ideas: the gaseous nature of the creature, an alien‑like presence, and a nod to the original 1960 film’s colour palette. The design process linked the protagonist’s everyday clothing to his transformed look, shaping the visual identity of the series.
The production combines sci‑fi thriller elements with social commentary, drawing on the original’s themes of humanity’s darker impulses while updating the aesthetic for modern audiences.
