Netflix Narnia adaptation sparks controversy over casting
A new Netflix adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s Narnia series, directed by Greta Gerwig, is generating controversy among Christian communities ahead of its scheduled release. The debate centers on the casting of Meryl Streep to provide the voice for Aslan, the lion who serves as a literary allegory for Jesus Christ.
Some critics have expressed concern that giving the character a female voice challenges traditional religious symbolism. Additionally, promotional imagery featuring a lion with rainbow-colored fur has led to accusations from some groups that the production is attempting to alter the character's identity.
The upcoming film, titled ‘Narnia: The Son of the Magician’, is expected to be set in the 1950s, departing from the original literary timeline. The cast also includes Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig, and Carey Mulligan. While the new production is not a direct continuation of the 2005 film trilogy, it will expand the cinematic universe of Lewis’s work.
