Netflix Narnia film reportedly has $280 million budget

Netflix is investing heavily in its upcoming fantasy adaptation, ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’, directed by Greta Gerwig. According to cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, the film has a reported production budget of $280 million.

If accurate, this would make the project one of the most expensive films in Netflix history, ranking second only to ‘The Electric State’, which cost approximately $320 million. The budget significantly exceeds other major Netflix productions such as ‘The Irishman’ ($225 million) and ‘Red Notice’ ($200 million).

Unlike many of the streaming service's direct-to-platform releases, Gerwig’s Narnia film is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, followed by a 49-day exclusive cinema window before arriving on the streaming platform on April 2, 2027. The film features a high-profile cast including Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan. The adaptation shifts the setting of C. S. Lewis’s original story from Victorian London to the post-war period of the 1950s.
