Netflix prepares for quarterly earnings amid projected 9% stock swing
Netflix is scheduled to release its third-quarter earnings report on Tuesday, with options markets indicating a potential stock price swing of up to 9% following the announcement. Current trader positioning suggests that shares could either drop to approximately $64, a two-year low, or rally to roughly $77.
Despite a 25% decline in share price since the start of the year due to concerns over engagement and revenue growth, analysts remain largely constructive. Visible Alpha estimates project a 12% year-over-year increase in revenue and earnings per share of 82 cents, up from 59 cents in the same quarter last year. Of 18 analysts tracked, 14 maintain a ‘buy’ rating.
Historically, Netflix has shown strong fourth-quarter performance, with shares rising in 17 of the last 24 years. Market observers note that the stock's direction for the quarter is often determined by the reaction to the October earnings report. In recent years, significant one-day moves following this report have frequently signaled the quarter's closing trend. Ahead of this report, the company also implemented a workforce reduction of approximately 6%, or 1,000 employees, as part of cost-tightening efforts.
