Netflix releases Chinese period drama ‘The Bride of the Golden Hairpin’

The Chinese period drama ‘The Bride of the Golden Hairpin’, also known internationally as ‘Where the Mask Ends’, has arrived on Netflix. Based on the novel ‘Jia Jin Chai’ by Xiao Jia Ren, the series follows A Chou, a woman of humble origins who shares an identical appearance with Wei Rao, the heiress of an influential family.

The plot centers on A Chou assuming Wei Rao’s identity on her wedding day to Lu Zhuo, a nobleman who is gravely ill and unconscious. As Lu Zhuo recovers, he begins to suspect his wife, and the protagonist must struggle to maintain her deception while the real Wei Rao threatens her position within the family.

The series stars Tian Xiwei and Yan Na. While the original novel concludes with a happy ending where the protagonists reunite and build a life together, the specific outcome of the Netflix adaptation remains to be seen as the series continues its release schedule.
