Netflix releases Contra el huracán based on Hurricane Otis survival stories

The Netflix film Contra el huracán, directed by Jorge Michel Grau, has gained significant viewership by dramatizing survival stories from the devastating Hurricane Otis. The production follows Wirpul, a new yacht captain, and his stepbrother Candi as they struggle to survive at sea when the storm hits.

The film is inspired by the real-life testimonies of survivors such as sailors Marlon Valdez and Jonathan Trinidad, who were managing luxury yachts in the bay when the hurricane struck Acapulco. The narrative is based on reporting by journalist Beatriz Guillén, which highlighted the experiences of those caught at sea during the emergency.

Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco on October 25, 2023, as a Category 5 storm with winds exceeding 257 kilometers per hour. The rapid intensification of the hurricane caught many by surprise, leading to widespread devastation.
