Netflix releases Lizzie Borden season of ‘Monster’ anthology

Netflix has released the fourth season of the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan anthology series ‘Monster’, titled ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’. The season focuses on the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, and the subsequent trial of their daughter, Lizzie Borden.

Ella Beatty stars as Lizzie Borden, while Vicky Krieps portrays the family maid, Bridget ‘Maggie’ Sullivan. The series has sparked discussion regarding its historical accuracy, specifically its depiction of a romantic relationship between Lizzie and Bridget. While the show presents this as a central element, historians note there is no concrete evidence to support such a relationship in real life.

The production also incorporates themes of female rage and connects Lizzie’s story to other infamous women, such as Aileen Wuornos. Creators are already considering potential subjects for a fifth season, including names like Ted Bundy and Dennis Rader.
