Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ sequel series debuts at Hillman College

The Netflix sequel series to the classic sitcom ‘A Different World’ has debuted, following a new generation of students at the fictional Hillman College. The show centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, as she navigates her freshman year and attempts to establish an identity separate from her famous parents.

The series features an ensemble cast including characters such as Rashida, a criminal justice major; Shaquille, a football recruit; and Kojo, a fashion entrepreneur. A significant plot point involves Ellington, a teaching assistant and love interest for Deborah, who is revealed to be the son of Denise Huxtable, connecting the new series directly to the legacy of ‘The Cosby Show’.

Showrunner Felicia Pride and director Debbie Allen have designed the series as a sequel rather than a reboot, maintaining continuity by having original actors reprise their roles in supporting capacities. The production aims to explore the complexities of the contemporary Black experience through themes of romance, academic struggle, and social activism.
