Netflix announces FTX scandal miniseries ‘The Altruists’

Netflix has released the first trailer for ‘The Altruists’, an eight-episode limited series dramatizing the rise and fall of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The series focuses on the relationship between former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, played by Anthony Boyle, and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, played by Julia Garner.

Set against the backdrop of the 2022 collapse that saw approximately $8 billion in customer funds disappear, the show explores the concept of ‘effective altruism’ and how the two protagonists, described as ‘Gen Z’s own Bonnie and Clyde,’ allegedly moved from idealistic intentions to committing massive financial crimes. The production is led by creator Graham Moore and involves Higher Ground Productions, founded by Barack and Michelle Obama.

The series is scheduled to premiere on November 19. It aims to depict the psychological complexities of the individuals involved, tracing how their professional and romantic connection influenced the management of their multi-billion dollar empire before its rapid disintegration.
