Netflix Narnia adaptation by Greta Gerwig draws fan debate
Netflix is preparing a major cinematic adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s fantasy series, beginning with ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ directed by Greta Gerwig. The film, which serves as a prequel to the original stories, is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
The project has sparked significant debate among fans following the release of its trailer. Some viewers have expressed concerns regarding creative departures from the source material, including casting choices and changes to the historical setting, which shifts from the original 1900s to the 1950s.
In response to the controversy, the family of C. S. Lewis, specifically his stepsons David and Douglas Gresham, issued a statement expressing support for Gerwig. They noted their personal interactions with the director and her “sincere passion for the Narnia series” during visits to the London film set.
To coincide with the film, HarperCollins Brasil and Netflix have announced new editorial projects, including special editions of the books with new artwork by Vance Kovacs and a graphic novel adaptation of ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ illustrated by Ben Hatke.
