Netflix releases ‘Unabomber’ film about Ted Kaczynski manhunt
Netflix has released ‘Unabomber’, a film dramatizing the 18-year manhunt for American terrorist Ted Kaczynski. The narrative follows two timelines: Kaczynski’s time as a Harvard student in the 1950s and the 1996 investigation led by FBI Agent Joanne Miller.
While the film incorporates historical elements—such as Kaczynski’s victim Thomas Mosser and the role of his brother David in his capture—it also utilizes fictionalized elements. The character of Joanne Miller, portrayed by Shailene Woodley, is a fictional creation. The film depicts a dramatic conflict between Miller and her male colleagues, portraying her as a visionary investigator who succeeds where her superiors fail. Screenwriters Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves have acknowledged that the specific dramatic conflicts involving Miller were created for the production.
The film also touches upon Kaczynski’s involvement in psychological studies at Harvard that served as precursors to the CIA’s MKUltra program, exploring how these experiences contributed to his later psychological state and his manifesto against the industrial system.
