Netflix releases ‘East of Eden’ series starring Florence Pugh

Netflix has released a new seven-episode limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, ‘East of Eden’. The production is written and produced by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of director Elia Kazan, who directed the famous 1955 film adaptation. This version aims to be more faithful to the original text by providing a broader perspective, specifically focusing on the complex and manipulative character of Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh.

The series follows the multi-generational saga of the Trask family in California’s Salinas Valley, spanning from the Civil War to the end of World War I. It explores themes of familial rivalry, inherited sin, and the struggle between good and evil through the lives of brothers Adam and Charles Trask, and later their sons, Cal and Aron. The cast includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, and Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask.

While the story is set in California, the production was filmed extensively in New Zealand to recreate the early 20th-century American landscape. Locations used include the South Island and North Island, with towns like Ōamaru serving as key period settings. Critical reception has been varied, with some praising the visual scale and Pugh’s performance, while others have critiqued the pacing and narrative choices.
